Introduction

We are a group of concerned parents, educators, teachers, students and taxpayers that are committed to taking back control of the Metropolitan School District of Perry Township from a divided school board. This division started from the actions of four individual board members with personal agendas and whose actions have put our schools in a downward spiral. Their ongoing disregard for board by-laws and state laws, as well as the flippant waste of taxpayer's dollars must be opposed in an effort to Take Back Perry Schools.

Take Back Perry Schools Sues School Board

Today at 2:00pm, the announcement was made that our group has sued the School Board of Perry Township.

The suit, filed this afternoon in Marion Superior Court by Take Back Perry Schools, asks the court to declare the board’s conduct in suspending Williams in November without charge unlawful.

“This lawsuit is the public trying to break the logjam about the superintendent,” said the group’s attorney, Ed DeLaney, during a press conference outside the City-County Building this afternoon. “The school district needs to stop fiddling around looking for charges.”

A hearing will be held at 1:30 p.m. May 9 in Superior Court 4 with Judge Cynthia Ayers presiding. The case is Take Back Perry Schools, Jennifer Mertz, Teri Margason, Chuck Stumpf and Tim Nance vs. Board of School Trustees of the Metropolitan School District of Perry Township.

  2. Nance Says:

As a plaintiff in this case, I would like to express why I chose to be part of filing this legal complaint. Simply put, Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Walsh, Mrs. Thompson, and Mrs. Alexander have given me no other alternative.

My remaining remarks here are an open note to them:

I would like to address the voting block of the four majority school board members:

The people of this community have tried for over five months now to work with you.

We have tried to reason with you.
    You will not listen.

We have tried to offer compromise.
    You have refused.

    We have expressed our concerns.
You have ignored us or at times, even mocked, admonished, and chastised us.

    We are your constituents.

You are accountable to us and maybe today’s action will open your eyes to that fact.

A complaint has been filed in Marion County Superior Court today charging you four with unlawfully placing Dr. Williams on leave.

You only have yourselves to blame for the spot where you now find yourselves.

Maybe now through this action, the people of Perry Twp. will get what we deserve - Elected officials that listen to us and represent us.

If so, it will be sad that it took litigation for you to meet the most basic of expectations of your constituents.

  3. Anita Sewall Says:

Finally, someone is actively pursuing this school board and demanding answers. I hate that it has had to come to this, but as a citizen and parent in Perry Township, I am sick and tired of feeling helpless in the face of this school board. A fair and impartial judgment is necessary and welcomed.

  4. former SHS student, parent Says:

i started SHS in 1996, i saw them always take swift action when they found a problem. there are some very good teachers and principals there. to john smith who obviously is posting messages containing untrue facts, ask anyone who attended the school, they have a zero tolerance policy for foul language, violence, and bad grades. so please quit lying to the public.
